How important is it to have regular health checkups?

Have you ever missed your car servicing, even if it hasn’t given you a tough time with breakdowns or flat tires? The moment you notice a slight variation of room temperature, don’t you quickly call up the mechanic to check if anything is wrong with your air-conditioner? What about yourself? How often to you go for a health checkup? It’s interesting to note that people hardly give importance to their body and mind, compared to the ‘health’ of their favourite machines. Regular health checkups are important for a healthy lifestyle.

Why Checkups

Any preventable diseases can be found, treated and cured if one opts for medical checkups at regular intervals. During a checkup, the healthcare professional takes a look at the person’s age, lifestyle, habits, family history and medical history, which could have an impact on your health. Tests and screenings detect if something is wrong and if so, lifestyle improvement, preventive measures and timely medication can help one fight any possible disease.

Advantages

Health examination has several boons – the most important one is increasing the chances of cure. The earlier a disease is diagnosed the better are the recovery chances. The benefits of health checkups are:

  • Spots potential health complications
  • Less risk of falling sick
  • Less complications
  • Less treatment costs
  • Saves treatment time
  • Inspires to maintain health goals
  • Increased life span
  • Updated medical knowledge and technological advances in the field
  • Gives confidence to engage in health discourses

When to go for checkups?

One can go for a checkup as a primary prevention to identify any risk factor or even when there’s no apparent symptom. Or under any of these circumstances:

  • If you feel uneasy or sick
  • If you notice irregularity in your otherwise normal body functions
  • If there’s a symptom
  • BMI issues
  • If you have a family history
  • To manage chronic or existing conditions
  • To check the effects/side-effects of a new medication
  • To check risk factors of smoking, alcoholism or obesity
  • Those with sedentary lifestyle issues

How often should be checkups scheduled?

Always keep in mind that checkup frequency is dependent on the health condition of the person who goes for it and therefore, the scheduling system is not concrete. However, for general medical checkup, those aged between 19 and 21 can schedule it once in every two years. Those between 22 and 64 can schedule checkup every 1-3 years and those above 65, annually. Preventive steps like annual blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring and updated vaccination should be ensured every six months. Routine checkups include blood pressure, fasting glucose, cholesterol, HIV status, serum lipids and genetic cancer markers.

Preventive health screenings like annual well visit and cancer and sensory screenings can be done every 3 to 5 years for those above 40. Smokers and those who have quit smoking has to take occasional lung cancer screenings. Those above 50 are advised annual DEXA test to check bone density. Women should take pap smear testy for cervical cancer (every three years for 18-29 age group, 5 years for 30-49 age group, 4 years for those above 50) apart from annual mammograms.
