Department of Ophthalmology

The eye is an exceptionally delicate organ, and requires utmost care. Ophthalmology, literally meaning ‘The Science of Eyes’, is a surgical specialty that deals with diseases involving the eyes, brain and surrounding area.

Various types of diseases affect the eyes and surrounding areas and most of them are surgically rectifiable. Some of the common surgeries are,

Cataract surgery

Cataract extraction with implantation of Intraocular lens (IOL)

Glaucoma surgery

Facilitates the escape of excess aqueous humor from the eye to lower intraocular pressure, and sometimes lower IOP by decreasing the production of aqueous humor.Laser sugeries are also available for this.

Refractive surgery

To correct errors of refraction in the eye, reducing or eliminating the need for corrective lenses. In certain cases this can be achieved by laser.

Corneal surgery

Corneal surgery includes most refractive surgery as well as corneal transplant surgery.

Laser eye surgery

Lasers used to treat non-refractive conditions (e.g. to seal a retinal tear)

Vitreo-retinal surgery

Anterior vitrectomy is the removal of the front portion of vitreous tissue.

Retinal detachment repair

A scleral buckle is used in the repair of a retinal detachment. Eye muscle surgery

Eye muscle surgery typically corrects squint.

Oculoplastic surgery

The reconstruction of the eye and associated structures.

Eyelid surgery

This includes eyelid cysts and tumours, malpositions such as drooping eyelids (ptosis), inturning (entropion) or outturning (ectropion) of lid margin, staring eyes in thyroid eye disease, watering eyes, facial palsy rehabilitation and artificial (prosthetic) eyes.

Surgery involving the lacrimal apparatus

A dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a procedure to restore the flow of tears into the nose from the lacrimal sac when the nasolacrimal duct does not function.

Orbital surgery

Orbital reconstruction / Ocular prosthetics (False Eyes)
