What is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver. It is commonly caused by obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, or metabolic conditions like diabetes. Fatty liver can be:

1. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Not related to alcohol use.

2. Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD): Caused by excessive alcohol intake.

Fatigue or weakness.

Discomfort or pain in the upper right abdomen.

Unexplained weight loss.

Enlarged liver (noticed during a physical exam).

Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes) in severe cases.

How To Diagonose Fatty Liver ?

1. Physical Examination: Enlarged liver or tenderness in the upper right abdomen.

2. Blood Tests: Elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST).

3. Imaging Tests: Ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to detect liver fat.

4. FibroScan or Biopsy: To assess liver damage or confirm fatty liver disease.

Treatment Of Fatty Liver

There is no specific medication for fatty liver, but it can be managed with lifestyle changes:

1. Weight Loss: Reducing body weight can decrease liver fat.

2. Healthy Diet: Follow a diet low in sugar, saturated fats, and processed foods. Include vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains.

3. Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.

4. Avoid Alcohol: Especially in alcoholic fatty liver disease.

5. Control Underlying Conditions: Manage diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension.

6. Medications: In some cases, vitamin E, insulin sensitizers, or other drugs may be recommended.
